Top Health Benefits Of Lamb

It may surprise you, but lamb is one of the most nutritious forms of red meat out there. It is jam-packed full of proteins, vitamins, nutrients, and so much more. Lamb contributes to muscle maintenance, improved physical performance, and anemia protection, to name just a few. And it’s tasty!

What else could you want?

The positives that lamb provides for your body and health are endless. So let’s take a closer look at some of the top health benefits that lamb has to offer your body and diet, and see why you should make the switch to lamb today:

What is Lamb, again?

First of all, what is lamb again? Let’s quickly remind ourselves.

Lamb is the meat from a sheep that is under the age of 12 months old. It is a form of lean red meat, has a lower amount of fat content, is rich in protein and vitamins, and is tender and mild in flavour. Lamb has all the elements to be a great component in a healthy, balanced diet.

Muscle Maintenance

High quality proteins are found in lamb meat, and are an important source for maintaining muscle mass.

Creatine is found in lamb, and is an essential energy source for muscles, as it is beneficial for muscle growth and muscle maintenance. If you spend a lot of time working out at the gym, lamb may just be your best friend!

Amino acids are an incredibly important source of protein in most meats, including lamb, which contains ALL nine amino acids that you need. That’s crazy! Eating high protein foods in your diet can help preserve and maintain your muscle mass – especially in older adults.

FUN FACT: Cooked lamb can contain up to 26% in protein!

Improved Physical Performance

Lamb is a red meat that is lower in fat content than other meats, and can help contribute to weight loss and maintaining that healthy weight.

In addition, lamb also contains the amino acid beta-alanine which helps your body create a substance called carnosine. Carnosine contributes to how your muscles function and are associated with decreased fatigue and increased exercise performance.

Introducing a regular consumption of lamb into your diet may help athletes or bodybuilders and others who want to optimize their physical performance and the functioning of their muscles.

Anemia Protection

Another huge benefit of lamb? Anemia protection. Anemia is a common condition that continues to spread within individuals. Common symptoms include fatigue and weakness, along with many others.

Lamb contains large amounts of heme-iron which is important when facing iron-deficiency anemia. This nutrient is also found in other meat products, such as beef. Heme-iron is a bioavailable form of iron that is found in animal-derived foods, and also improves the absorption of nonheme iron, which is the iron that is found in plants.

Lamb is a good choice for a meat product when helping to prevent or fight iron-deficiency anemia as it will increase your iron intake.

FUN FACT: Eating beef or lamb 3-4 times a week can raise your level of iron intake.

How To Change Up Your Traditional Spaghetti Dinner With Lamb

On those busy nights when you feel like you don’t have the time or energy to cook up a serious meal (but still want something filling and delicious), spaghetti with meatballs is a go-to dinner. However, hectic evenings are too common and you can only have so much spaghetti with meatballs until you start to grow tired of it.

Changing up your typical plate of spaghetti with meatballs doesn’t have to be complicated or costly. In this blog, find out how to dress up this traditional dish and not get tired of it!

Spaghetti With Lamb Meatballs

One simple way to amp up your spaghetti dish is by swapping out beef meatballs with lamb meatballs! In comparison with beef meatballs, some people may find that lamb meatballs are more firm with a tender texture.

To make dinner less time consuming to prepare, Sungold offers pre-seasoned Italian-style lamb meatballs. They’re specially-made to enhance authentic pasta dishes, including spaghetti. Our Italian-style lamb meatballs are a mix of Canadian lamb meat with Italian herbs and spices like oregano and crushed chilies. When added to traditional spaghetti dishes, they really tie the dish together. The herbs and spices in the meatballs add flavours that aren’t typically found in beef meatballs. We promise your taste buds will be in for a treat with our mouthwatering seasoned meatballs!

In addition to swapping beef meatballs for lamb meatballs, take your spaghetti one step further by adding chopped vegetables like onions, carrots, and celery. Vegetables aren’t just packed with vitamins and minerals that are good for you and your health, but they also add even more flavour and texture to spaghetti dishes. Once you try it, you’ll never want to eat spaghetti with meatballs without adding these vegetables again!

To make things simple, we put together an easy-to-follow video and recipe on how to make spaghetti with Sungold’s lamb meatballs! You can pick up a pack of Sungold Italian-style meatballs at your local Sobeys, Safeway, Thrifty Foods, Foodland, Calgary CO-OP and Federated CO-OP and get cooking tonight!

Spaghetti With Lamb Meat Sauce

If you’re a fan of spaghetti with meat sauce, you’ll love this suggestion: take your spaghetti game to the next level by switching out the ground beef you use in your meat sauce for ground lamb meat! Ground lamb meat has a delectable taste that makes it unique from ground beef, so if you’ve never tried it before, this is the perfect opportunity to!

Swapping ground beef for ground lamb is easier than ever thanks to Sungold’s pre-seasoned ground lamb. No seasoning is required since the meat is already seasoned. Our favourite seasoned lamb is a fusion of fresh Canadian lamb with spices and herbs like rosemary and thyme that are sure to please at the dinner table. The ingredients used in our ground lamb bring out the flavours of tomato sauce and brings the dish together.

Although Sungold’s ground lamb is already seasoned with aromatic ingredients, we highly recommend adding diced onions and tomatoes to your meat sauce to add extra flavour. After you’ve plated your spaghetti with a scoop or two of the lamb meat sauce, finish it off by garnishing your spaghetti with shaved parmesan cheese and basil. Mmm, mmm!

Find Sungold’s ground lamb at your local Sobeys, Safeway, Thrifty Foods, Foodland, Calgary CO-OP and Federated CO-OP and use it in your next spaghetti meat sauce!

Change is considered good, and when it comes to food, change gives you the opportunity to discover what your taste buds have been missing out on! If we didn’t have differences in our meals, we’d easily become bored of them.

Changing up your classic spaghetti with meatballs by swapping beef for lamb is now as easy as ever with Sungold’s pre-seasoned lamb products. With our Italian-style lamb meatballs and our favourite seasoned ground lamb to choose from, you can have spaghetti the way you like – but with lamb! Just heat, eat, and enjoy!

Easy Lamb Recipes to Try for the Holidays

A few months back, when the warm breeze of summer started filling our days, we listed some of the best recipes to kick-off the BBQ season. Now that the cold winds are starting to blow and the season of gift-giving is just right around the corner, we will be listing three easy lamb recipes you can try for the holidays.

Italian-Style Slow Cooker Meatloaf

If you are a fan of Italian cuisine, this meatloaf recipe that combines beef and lamb will be right up your alley. Following Better Homes and Gardens’ recipe, the ingredients you would need for this dish are Italian-style stewed tomatoes, whole wheat bread crumbs, onion, zucchini, red sweet peppers, parsley, garlic, ground black pepper, feta cheese, 95% lean ground beef and 80% lean ground lamb. Once you’ve gathered all the ingredients, you just have to combine them all in a large bowl, place the mixture in a slow cooker, pat it into a loaf and leave it there for 3 1/2 hours on the low-heat setting, or for 1 1/2 hours on the high-heat setting.

What’s really great about this dish is that you can also cook it using one of the most reliable kitchen gadgets: the rice cooker. Some of the best rice cookers of 2020 can double as other appliances such as an electric pressure cooker, sterilizer, electric slow cooker, steamer and food warmer. In addition to this, some brands also have a 24-hour delay for longer cooking, automatic “keep warm” for up to 10 hours and advanced technologies that reduce cooking time by up to 70%.

Skillet Lamb Chops

Gifts are not the only things that make the holiday season exciting and fun. More than anything else, it is actually the much-awaited opportunity for people bound by blood and by a special bond to come together and bask in the company of each other. Gatherings like these are never complete without family-style suppers, and we’ve got just the right one for you. Skillet Lamb Chops are not only economical, they are also so easy to prepare. You just have to brown your seasoned chops in a heavy skillet with melted butter, oil and garlic. Then, dissolve a bouillon cube in water, simmer the mixture with the chops then add some cornstarch to thicken the sauce a bit.

The key to making this dish exceptional not only banks on getting the best local lamb shoulder chop but also on having the best tool for cooking. If you want to take this dish up a notch, consider using a cast-iron skillet instead of a regular one. Most of the cast iron skillets in 2020 are available at a reasonable price, are incredibly durable and can easily rival non-stick pans with a little tender love and care.

Braised Lamb Shanks

Braising lamb shanks can be quite intimidating at times, but that doesn’t always have to be the case — especially if you are guided by a good recipe. According to Delish’s easy-to-follow recipe, to make this dish, you’d need to sear your seasoned lamb shank in a large Dutch oven until golden brown and set it aside. Then, in the same Dutch oven, combine butter, onion, carrots, garlic, tomato paste and low-sodium beef broth. Once everything is thoroughly mixed, you can add the lamb back in, place the lid, pop the cookware in a preheated oven and leave it there for two hours.

The best way you can ensure that braised dishes such as these are thoroughly cooked is by investing in reliable cookware. Although most Dutch ovens this year cook similarly well, some brands are far easier to handle even with mitts or towels because of their design. Clever design can also keep food from getting trapped in the corners, allow steam to escape more easily and concentrate flavors better by giving better sear on meat.
